Divorce therapy alone, living abroad

One-to-one online support through a separation far from home

Keep your head, your dignity and your bond with your children while the relationship ends abroad

Going through a separation abroad on your own, in a short video

In this short video, I explain how one-to-one sessions can steady you through a separation when you live far from home.

Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

At a glance

Divorce therapy alone, living abroad, is one-to-one online support, in English, when your relationship is ending outside your home country. We meet by video, in your time zone. We work on the grief, the anger and the practical questions: where to live, parenting across distance and keeping your footing far from family.

It is the one-person form of divorce therapy, living abroad, and part of my work for couples living abroad.

You can ask for a free 30-minute call, book a session, read my client policy or write to me.

Is this the right page for you?

This is for you if…

This page is for one person living abroad, anywhere, whose relationship is ending. You join on your own, whether you are leaving or being left.

  • Your partner has left or asked to separate, and family is far away.
  • You are the one who wants to go, and dread what it will do to everyone.
  • You need to decide whether to stay in the country, go home or move on.
  • You worry about the children’s future if their parents end up in different countries.
  • Your ex-partner will not talk to a therapist.
  • You are a Dane abroad, and the end of the relationship raises the question of going home.
  • There is nobody nearby who really understands your situation.
  • You want to come through this with your dignity and your bond with your children intact.

This is probably not for you if…

What clients say

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.

Mark’s view

“When someone comes to me alone while their relationship ends abroad, they often feel they have lost two things at once: the partner and the life the partner made possible. The flat, the friends, sometimes even the right to stay. It is not surprising that people freeze or panic. What helps is a fixed point, a place to sort what must be decided this week from what can wait. From there, step by step, most people find their way to choices they can live with, and to a life that is theirs again.”

Supervision supports the quality of my work

Therapy needs reflection and accountability

I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.

My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.

Let’s discuss online therapy

You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.

Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.

A typical situation

Karen is Danish and has lived in Melbourne for twelve years with her Australian husband, Ben, and their two sons. Ben has told her he wants to separate. Her friends are mostly his friends, her parents are in Odense, and the boys have Australian accents and Australian lives. Karen cannot sleep and cannot decide anything.

In our online sessions, we first make room for the shock. Then we separate what needs deciding now from what can wait a year. Karen begins to talk to Ben more calmly about the boys, and to picture a future that might work for all three of them, wherever she ends up.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

When divorce therapy alone, living abroad, helps

A separation abroad can take your home, your plans and your support all at once. You do not have to carry it alone.

Abroad, the person you are separating from may also be your only close tie in the country. Friends were shared, family is far away, and the language of the courts and schools may not be yours.

Divorce therapy alone, living abroad, gives you a steady weekly anchor while the ground shifts.

Has your partner left, or asked to, and you are far from family?

Being left far from home can feel like a double loss: the relationship and the life you built around it.

We make room for the shock and grief, and then for the next steps.

Are you the one who wants out, and dreading what comes next?

Leaving can bring guilt as well as relief, especially when the other person would be stranded without you.

We look at your decision honestly and at how to carry it out as decently as possible.

Do you have to decide whether to stay in the country?

Going home, staying for the children or starting over somewhere new. Each choice has a price.

We weigh them calmly, so you do not decide in panic.

Are you worried about the children’s future across borders?

School, language, grandparents in two countries. Children of international separations need extra care.

We keep their needs in view while you work out your own.

Does your ex-partner refuse to talk to a therapist?

You cannot make your ex-partner come. You can change how you show up in every conversation with them, and that often lowers the heat.

Is there nobody nearby who really gets it?

Friends back home may not understand your life abroad, and local friends may have been mostly your partner’s. These sessions are a place where all of it can be said.

Going through this? Request a call or book a session, and we will start with what weighs most today.

What divorce therapy alone, living abroad, helps you do

You cannot stop the ending. You can choose how you walk through it.

Divorce therapy alone, living abroad, works on three things side by side: your grief and anger, how you talk with your ex-partner, and the practical choices about home, country and children.

How do you stay steady while everything moves?

Each session gives you a fixed point in a moving week. We sort what needs deciding now from what can wait, and that alone lowers the panic.

Can you grieve without losing your footing?

Yes. Grief comes in waves, often on top of exhaustion. We let the feelings in, so they do not ambush you during a hard conversation.

Can you speak to your ex-partner calmly?

We prepare difficult talks in advance: what you want to say, what you will not be drawn into and how to end the call if it turns ugly.

Can you decide where to live with a clear head?

We look at work, finances, family, friendships and the children’s needs, so the decision about where to live is yours, not your fear’s.

Can you protect the children from the conflict?

We plan what the children hear and how you keep conflict away from them, even when the other parent does not cooperate.

What does life after the split look like?

Over time, you start to picture a life of your own again, in whichever country you choose.

How divorce therapy alone, living abroad, begins

You do not need to have it all worked out. You only need to log in.

In the first sessions of divorce therapy alone, living abroad, I hear your story, the state of the separation and what presses on you most. If another kind of help would suit you better, I will tell you.

What happens in my first online session?

It lasts one hour, by video. We look at where things stand, what you are most afraid of and what needs your attention first.

What if I am the one leaving?

Then we look at how to leave with as much honesty and care as possible, including what you owe your ex-partner and the children, and what you do not.

How long does it usually take?

It varies. Some people come for a few weeks around the decision. Others want support through a move that takes months.

How often should I meet you?

Often weekly at the start, then with longer gaps. We plan around time zones and travel.

Is a bundle worth it?

If you expect a series of sessions, a bundle fixes the plan and lowers the price per hour. The bundle cards further down show the options.

How will I know I am ready to stop?

You feel steadier, the key decisions are made and you can deal with your ex-partner without being thrown each time. Then we stop, or meet now and then.

How it works with me

  1. Ask for a free 30-minute call or pick a time in the calendar.
  2. The first hour, by video, looks at where things stand and what needs your attention first.
  3. We usually meet weekly at the start, then with longer gaps as decisions settle.
  4. When you feel steadier and the key choices are made, we decide together whether to stop.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is divorce therapy alone, living abroad?

Divorce therapy alone, living abroad, is individual online support, in English, for someone going through a separation outside their home country. It covers the emotional side and the practical choices about country, home and children.

Can it help if my ex-partner will not take part?

Yes. You can only change your own part, and that is often enough to calm the conflict and help you decide well.

I am Danish and my marriage abroad is ending. Is this for me?

Yes. Danes whose relationship ends abroad often face the question of going home, sometimes with children who have grown up somewhere else. We work through that with care.

Can you help me decide whether to go home?

I can help you think it through clearly. The decision stays with you.

Do you give legal advice?

No. I am a psychotherapist, not a lawyer. For questions about custody, residence or moving with children, please speak to a family lawyer in the country concerned. I help with the human side.

Are sessions in English?

Yes. On this site I only work in English.

Will you help me with the children?

Yes. We look at what the children need from you now, how to talk to them and how to keep them out of the conflict.

What if the separation came as a shock?

Then we start with the shock. In the first days and weeks, acute online couples therapy alone may suit you better, and we can move on to the separation later.

What does it cost?

Each session is one hour on your own. You will find the fee in US dollars on my prices page, and a prepaid bundle lowers it by 10 per cent.

How do I book?

Pick a slot in the booking calendar, which adjusts to your time zone, or request a free 30-minute call if you want to talk first.
