In this short video, I explain why international couples often fight about culture when the real fight is about closeness, and how a short EFT block can show that.

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.
“Looking back over my 22 years of practice, I have watched many international couples fight about culture when they are really fighting about closeness. Under the arguments about families and traditions, one partner is often asking ‘Will you choose me, over everything we left behind?’, and the other ‘Can I be myself here without losing you?’. Some feel both in the same breath. EFT helps those questions be spoken and answered, and a concentrated block gives them the time they deserve.”
Mark Colclough, MA, psychotherapist and EFT couples therapist
I am Mark Colclough, MA. I have practised since 2004 and offer online psychotherapy and couples therapy in English.
My training brings together your emotions, your thoughts and your relationships. My deep passion is the moment when what happens between you finally makes sense, to each of you and to each other. I have lived and worked in nine countries, so I know something of life across languages, cultures and borders.
Read about my background, or explore online psychotherapy and online couples therapy.
I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.
My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.
You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.
Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.
Signe is Danish and Kofi is Ghanaian. They met in London and still live there with their toddler. Every holiday turns into a battle over whose family to visit. Kofi feels Signe looks down on his family’s closeness, and Signe feels swallowed by it. Both travel for work, and regular sessions lasted three weeks.
They book three EFT sessions over two days. Beneath every holiday fight we find the same cycle: Kofi pursues, Signe withdraws. On the second day, Kofi says he is afraid of losing his roots, and Signe says she is afraid of disappearing. They log off with a name for their cycle and a follow-up date.
I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.
You blame the move, the families or the culture. Underneath, the same frightened dance keeps going.
Back-to-back EFT couples therapy abroad looks past holidays, in-laws and traditions to the emotional cycle that runs underneath them. With sessions close together, the deeper layer stays open from one meeting to the next.
For couples whose diaries belong to employers and airlines, a few protected days can do more than months of cancelled appointments.
Family, money, holidays, where to live. The topics change, yet you both feel the same jolt and react the same way.
We follow the jolt instead of the topic.
Talking about fear or shame in a language that is not your own can feel clumsy and exposed. One of you may sound harsher, or simpler, than you mean.
I slow down, check meaning and make room for the feeling behind the words.
After a move, one partner may rely on the other for nearly everything: friends, language, money, belonging. That imbalance can feel frightening on both sides.
EFT helps you talk about the need without anyone feeling small.
A secret or a betrayal hits harder when your usual friends and family are in another country.
In a block, we can stay with the injury long enough for it to be understood.
Two careers and constant travel can mean therapy never gets past the first few sessions.
A concentrated block makes EFT possible in the days you can actually protect.
A new posting, a move home or a decision about children can bring old hurts to the surface at the worst moment.
We work with those hurts before the decision, so you can face it together.

When the cycle is named, the culture clash often shrinks to its real size.
We calm the cycle first, by naming it together. Next, we reach the attachment fears beneath it, often about being left, swallowed or not enough. Finally, you practise turning towards each other in the moments that used to pull you apart.
I trace a recent argument with you step by step, noting where culture shaped the words and where fear shaped the reaction. Both matter, and they are not the same thing.
Yes. Fear of losing each other sounds similar in every language. We find simple words for it together, in English, and check that they mean the same to both of you.
Yes. When the more dependent partner can name the need without apology, and the other can respond without feeling trapped, the relationship often relaxes.
Yes, with care. EFT has a structured way of working with attachment injuries, and a block gives that work the continuity it needs.
When the bond feels safer, decisions about countries, jobs and children become choices you make together instead of battles one of you wins.
Before the block ends, we name your cycle, agree how you will catch it on the phone or on video while apart, and book follow-up sessions.

Emotional depth, careful pacing. That is the rule for every EFT block.
A short first call tells us whether back-to-back EFT couples therapy abroad suits you now. If it does, we agree the number of sessions and the days, and I set the times around both your clocks.
Two 2-hour EFT sessions in one day, with a long break between them, for couples who can clear a single day together.
One EFT session a day over two or three days, so each night can do its own quiet work.
Three or four EFT sessions inside one week, with a little more space for work and children.
Weekend dates are sometimes possible. Mention it when you first write.
Back-to-back EFT couples therapy abroad is deep emotional work across time zones, so it needs extra care. We choose hours when you are both rested, and we slow down whenever one of you needs it.
We plan follow-up that fits your travel, such as regular EFT couples therapy for couples living abroad or a few check-ins.

Yes. The need to feel safe with a partner is shared across cultures, even though the way it is shown differs. EFT works with that shared need.
It need not. I slow down when meaning matters, check that words land as intended and leave room for the feeling behind them.
EFT works best when you both want to stay. If one of you is unsure, divorce therapy for couples living abroad or couples therapy for couples living abroad may be the better first step.
Often, yes, once the first shock has settled. For the first days after an affair comes out, infidelity couples therapy for couples living abroad is the place to begin.
Yes. Each of you logs in from where you are, and I plan around both time zones.
In back-to-back EFT couples therapy abroad, a first block is often three to six sessions. We fix the number together and look at it again as we go.
If you are visiting Denmark anyway, yes. See fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen.
