Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad

Online help to recover from an affair when you live far from home

Understand what happened, steady the hurt and decide your future together, without family nearby to lean on

Affairs and life abroad, in a short video

In this short video, I explain why an affair can hit harder when you live abroad, and how we work through it online.

Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

At a glance

Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, is online couples therapy, in English, for couples recovering from an affair far from home. Abroad, the hurt partner may have no family nearby, few friends of their own and a life that was built around the relationship. We meet by video in your time zone, steady the hurt, understand what happened and decide together what comes next.

It combines online couples therapy after infidelity with my work for couples living abroad. If only one of you will take part, infidelity therapy alone, living abroad is for you.

You can ask for a free 30-minute call, book a session, read my client policy or write to me.

What clients say

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.

Mark’s view

“Having lived and worked in nine countries myself, I know how much a life abroad can rest on one relationship. When that relationship is betrayed, the hurt partner does not only lose trust. They may lose their sense of why they are in that country at all. The partner who strayed often carries their own story of loneliness or pressure that nobody heard. Neither story cancels the other. When both are told honestly, a couple can decide, freely and fairly, whether to rebuild, and where.”

Supervision supports the quality of my work

Therapy needs reflection and accountability

I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.

My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.

Let’s discuss online therapy

You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.

Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.

A typical situation

Lars is Danish and works on rotation in the Gulf. His wife, Camila, moved from Brazil to be with him and now lives in Doha with their two children. On a long rotation, Lars began an affair with a colleague. When Camila found out, she had no family nearby, few friends of her own and no idea whether she wanted to stay in the country, let alone the marriage.

In our online sessions, often from two places, we steady the first weeks. Then we look at how far apart their lives had drifted. Lars takes responsibility without excuses, and Camila speaks about how alone she has felt for years. Slowly they start to decide what kind of life, and which country, could work for them.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

When infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, makes sense

An affair shakes any relationship. Far from home, it can shake the whole life you built around it.

When you live abroad, the partner who was betrayed may also be the one who moved, gave up a career or depends on the other for a visa or a social life. That makes the hurt deeper and the choices harder.

Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, gives you a structured space to face it, with someone outside both your circles.

Has an affair come out, and there is nobody nearby to tell?

Friends abroad are often shared, and family is a long flight away. The hurt partner may carry the news with no one to tell.

Our sessions become one place where it can be said in full.

Did loneliness abroad play a part in what happened?

Isolation does not excuse an affair, but it can be part of the story. One partner may have felt invisible in the new life, or the other may have felt the weight of everything resting on them.

We look at it honestly, without blame and without excuses.

Did it happen during long trips or time apart?

Postings, rotations and business trips put many couples abroad apart for weeks at a time. Distance can make secrets easier to keep.

We look at what the distance did to the relationship, and what would need to change.

Does the hurt partner feel trapped in a country that is not theirs?

If the hurt partner followed the other abroad, they may feel stuck: unable to leave easily, unable to stay comfortably.

We name that power imbalance, so it can be part of any fair decision.

Do you both want to try, but cannot stop circling the same questions?

Both of you may want to try, yet the same questions come back night after night.

We give those questions a safe place, so they can be answered rather than endlessly repeated.

Are you unsure whether to rebuild, or go home?

Rebuilding may mean staying where you are. It may mean moving on together, or apart. We look at every option without pushing any of them.

Is this where you are? Request a call or book a session. Either of you can take the first step.

What infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, helps you do

Recovery after an affair is possible. It needs honesty, time and a clear process.

Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, works in stages: first steadying the hurt, then understanding how the affair happened, and finally deciding together whether and how to rebuild.

How do we make sense of the affair?

We look at the relationship before the affair, the life abroad around it and the choices made inside it. Understanding is not the same as excusing.

Can the questions be asked without tearing you apart?

Yes. I help you set limits on when and how the questions are asked, so the hurt partner gets real answers and neither of you is worn down.

Can the partner who strayed take real responsibility?

Real responsibility means answering honestly, without defending or minimising, and showing it over time. We practise that in our sessions.

Can trust grow back?

Trust grows back slowly, through repeated honesty and kept promises. We agree what that will look like in your daily life, including when one of you travels.

Can you decide about the future fairly?

We look at the practical and emotional sides of every option, including the country question, so neither of you feels the choice was forced.

What does a rebuilt relationship look like?

A rebuilt relationship is not the old one patched up. It is a new one, with more honesty and a fairer balance between you.

How infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, begins

You do not need to know yet whether you will stay together. We start with the hurt.

In the first sessions of infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, I hear from both of you, steady the situation and agree how we will work. If another kind of help would suit you better, I will tell you.

What happens in our first online session?

You join together for two hours, by video. We look at what has come out, how each of you is coping and what you both need right now.

Will you see each of us alone as well?

Sometimes, yes. A single individual session each can help, especially early on. I keep it transparent, so it never becomes a way of keeping secrets.

How long does recovery take?

It varies. Many couples need several months of regular sessions. We review progress together as we go.

How often should we meet?

Often every one to two weeks at first, then with longer gaps. We plan around travel, and you can join from two places if one of you is away.

Is a bundle worth it?

Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, usually takes several sessions, so a bundle often fits. It fixes a plan and lowers the price per session. The bundle cards further down show the options.

How will we know we are through the worst?

The questions come less often, the hurt partner feels safer and you can talk about the future again. Then we decide together what comes next.

How it works with me

  1. Either of you can ask for a free 30-minute call or choose a time.
  2. Our first session lasts two hours, by video. We look at what has come out and what each of you needs now.
  3. We meet every one to two weeks at first, planned around travel and time zones.
  4. As trust returns, sessions space out, and we decide together whether to continue or stop.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is infidelity couples therapy, living abroad?

Infidelity couples therapy, living abroad, is online couples therapy, in English, for couples recovering from an affair outside their home countries. It looks at the affair, the relationship and how life abroad shapes both.

Why does living abroad matter after an affair?

Abroad, the hurt partner may depend on the other for home, friends or the right to stay. That makes the betrayal deeper and the choices harder, so we take it into account.

Can we recover if the affair was with someone from our new country?

Yes. Affairs within the new country can make the hurt partner feel doubly a stranger. We work with that directly.

What if one of us wants to go home?

That question often comes up after an affair abroad. We look at it fairly, from both sides, without forcing an answer.

Will you tell us whether to stay together?

No. That decision is yours. I help you reach it with clear eyes.

Are sessions in English?

Yes. I see every couple on this site in English, and most couples abroad use it together already.

What if the affair is still going on?

Couples work needs the affair to be over. If it is still going on, we talk first about what that means and what each of you needs.

What if we only found out this week?

In the first days, acute online couples therapy may help you steady things first. We can move on to recovery work afterwards.

What does it cost?

Sessions are 2-hour online couples sessions. My prices page shows the fee in US dollars, and a bundle paid in advance costs 10 per cent less.

How do we book?

Choose a session time, shown in your own time zone, or ask for a free 30-minute call if you would like to talk first.
