Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

  • You want to fly home with a plan for the conversation waiting for you.

This is probably not for you if…

Here you travel by yourself. If one of the following is closer to your situation, its page will help more.

What clients say

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.

Mark’s view

“Since my first client in 2004, it has struck me how much clearer one person becomes after a few days away from home. Underneath, some are asking ‘Does my partner even miss me?’ and others ‘If I let them close, will I lose myself again?’. At home those questions are drowned out by the next argument. In a quiet room in another city they can finally be heard, and the answer often changes what happens when you fly back.”

Supervision supports the quality of my work

Therapy needs reflection and accountability

I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.

My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.

Let’s discuss online therapy

You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.

Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.

A typical situation

Mikkel is Danish and lives in Chicago with his wife, Rosa, who is American. They have two young children. Since Rosa’s promotion they argue about everything, and Mikkel has started to wonder whether he wants to stay, in the marriage and in the United States. Rosa thinks therapy is a waste of money.

Mikkel adds four days to a trip home for his father’s birthday and books six one-hour sessions. He sees how his silence after each argument leaves Rosa alone with the children and the anger. He flies back with a calmer way to raise the question of the future, and continues online.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

When fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen makes sense

Sometimes you need to step away from the relationship to see it clearly.

When every day at home brings the same tension, it is hard to think about anything except the next argument. A few days in another city can change that.

Fly-in couples therapy alone gives you that distance, with sessions to help you use it well.

Will your partner not travel, or not take part?

Your partner may refuse therapy, or may not be ready to travel. You can still start.

When one person changes how they respond, the pattern between two people has to shift as well.

Is there nobody suitable to see where you live?

Many people abroad cannot find an English-speaking therapist nearby who understands a life between countries.

A short trip to Copenhagen can solve that, and keep your private life out of your local community.

Are you coming to Copenhagen already?

If you are already coming for work, family or a holiday, a few sessions can turn part of the trip into time for yourself.

Danes abroad often plan this around a visit home.

Do you need distance from home to think clearly?

Away from home, the daily irritations go quiet. What is left is the bigger question of what you want.

We use that quiet carefully, without rushing you.

Is a big decision weighing on you?

Perhaps the question is whether to keep the marriage going, whether to move back to your home country, or both at once.

We look at each option honestly, and I will not push you either way.

Would a few focused days suit you better than months of sessions?

A handful of days in one place can do what a long run of short appointments struggles to.

One conversation leads straight into the next, with walks and rest in the gaps.

What fly-in couples therapy alone helps you do

Distance from home, a clear focus and room to think between sessions.

Fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen looks at three things: the loop that keeps running between you and your partner, the move you make inside it, and what you will do differently once you land.

How do you see your own part from a distance?

In fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen, we replay a few recent clashes in slow motion. Seen from another city, your own contribution often stands out more sharply than it ever does at home.

Can you work out what you actually want?

Yes. Without the pull of everyday routine, wishes, fears and obligations are easier to tell apart.

Can you understand your partner better while apart?

Often, yes. With some distance it is easier to imagine what your partner feels and why they react as they do.

Can you prepare the conversation that waits at home?

Yes. Part of fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen is rehearsing how you will open the talk that is waiting for you back home.

Can you weigh a decision about the relationship, or about where to live?

Yes. Whether the choice is about the relationship or about which country to live in, we lay out the options side by side. The big decision may wait, but you fly home with the next step clear.

What do people usually take home?

After fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen, most people fly home calmer, clearer about what they want and with a plan for the first conversation.

How a fly-in block on your own is planned

Come without a plan if you like. We settle the theme before you set off.

Ahead of buying tickets, we speak online to choose the theme, fix dates and decide how many meetings are sensible. If this format is wrong for you, you will hear that from me.

What does a block look like?

Often one or two one-hour sessions a day over three to five days, with plenty of time to rest in between. We fix the plan together before you travel.

What do I do between sessions?

Sleep, wander the harbour, eat properly. At most I will give you one thing to observe in yourself.

How many days should I plan?

Most people plan three to five days. We decide together, based on what you need and what you can manage.

Do people come back for a second visit?

Normally one trip first. On the last day we decide whether you return, carry on by video or pause.

Is a bundle worth it for a block alone?

Several meetings in a few days is where a bundle earns its keep, bringing the price per hour down. Have a look at the bundle cards further down.

How will I know it helped?

You land steadier, you have the opening words ready, and the first evening back unfolds in a new way. A few weeks on, we can look back at it by video.

How it works with me

  1. Book a free 30-minute call, or email me your rough travel dates first.
  2. On a short video call we pick the theme, the number of meetings and a timetable.
  3. Once you are in Copenhagen, we meet face to face for an hour or two each day, leaving the rest of the day free.
  4. On your final day we choose the next step, perhaps video sessions, joint work or a break.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen?

Fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen is several face-to-face hours with me over a short stay, for one partner who travels here to work on a relationship. We meet in central Copenhagen and speak English.

Can I have more than one session in a day?

You can. When a day holds two meetings, a long pause sits between them.

Can the sessions be spread across a week?

Yes, and many people like that. A week-long stay leaves whole afternoons to digest what came up.

Will you hear only my side?

Your account is the one I hear, and I never forget that it is one of two. I keep your partner fairly in view and will question you gently when it is useful.

Do you help with travel or a place to stay?

I do not arrange travel or accommodation, but I am happy to tell you which parts of the city are convenient for the practice.

I am a Dane living abroad. Can I combine this with a visit home?

Yes. Danes abroad often book fly-in couples therapy alone in Copenhagen in the days around a family visit. Sessions are in English.

What if it becomes too much?

Then we ease off, skip a meeting or reshape the plan. The trip is yours, not an endurance test.

What happens when I go home?

On the last day we pick the next step together, perhaps video sessions by yourself, joint work with your partner, or a rest.

What does it cost?

You pay per one-hour meeting, so the total follows the number you plan. Fees in US dollars are listed on my prices page. Prepaying with a therapy bundle takes 10 per cent off.
