Back-to-back couples therapy alone abroad is a short block of 1-hour online sessions for one partner who lives outside the country they grew up in. Everything is by video and in English, and the hours sit close together.
It helps when your partner says no to therapy, or when your working hours and time zone make a regular appointment impossible. Danes living abroad are very welcome. It is the short-block version of couples therapy alone for people living abroad.

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.
“Looking back over my 22 years of practice, the people who come to me alone and far from home are often close to the end of their strength. Their partner may be their whole world in the new country, so every distance feels enormous. Underneath, they are asking ‘Do I still matter to you, now that I have given up so much?’, while their partner may be asking ‘Can I take a step back without you falling apart?’. A few focused days can help you find your own footing again, wherever the relationship goes.”
Mark Colclough, MA, psychotherapist and EFT couples therapist
I am Mark Colclough, MA. I have practised since 2004 and offer online psychotherapy and couples therapy in English.
My training brings together your emotions, your thoughts and your relationships. My deep passion is the moment when what happens between you finally makes sense, to each of you and to each other. I have lived and worked in nine countries, so I know something of life across languages, cultures and borders.
Read about my background, or explore online psychotherapy and online couples therapy.
I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.
My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.
You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.
Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.
Kirsten is Danish and has lived in Hong Kong for four years with her British husband, Neil. She works remotely on European hours, he works long days in finance, and they barely overlap. Neil thinks therapy is ‘a lot of talking’ and will not take part. Kirsten feels she is disappearing.
She books four morning sessions across one week. We look at the loneliness behind her sharp remarks, what Neil’s long hours may be protecting him from and two small steps she can take: a weekly language class and one fixed evening a week together. She finishes with a plan and a follow-up date.
I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.
You are far from home, the relationship is hurting, and you are the one ready to act.
Back-to-back couples therapy alone abroad offers a few days of close, continuous support, in whichever country you are. We start from the relationship as you see it and focus on what is in your hands.
When one person changes how they respond, the whole relationship has to adjust.
Your partner may not believe in therapy, may feel blamed by the idea, or may simply say no. You may feel the relationship cannot wait for them to change their mind.
You can begin on your own, now.
Working remotely on another country’s hours, travelling for work or juggling children alone can leave no fixed hour free.
A block can be fitted into the few days you can protect, at times that suit your clock.
Abroad, your partner may be the only person who really knows you. Every distance between you then feels enormous.
We look at how to stay close to your partner while building other support around you.
Many people who move for a partner leave a job, friends and a language behind. The grief can turn quietly into resentment.
We give the loss its proper place, so it does not leak out as criticism.
Different expectations about family, closeness or roles can leave you feeling misunderstood in your own home.
We sort out what is cultural difference and what is the pattern between you.
Some people come because they are not sure whether they want to stay, in the relationship or in the country.
A few calm days let you think without anyone pulling you either way.

Clarity often comes faster when you have a few days in a row to think.
We begin with the moments that hurt most between you and your partner. After that, we explore your own feelings and needs, including what you lost by moving. Last, we plan concrete steps you can take at home and in your new life.
We agree one main aim, the number of hours and the days before we start, and I plan the times around your time zone.
Often, yes. Loneliness abroad can look like a relationship problem, and a relationship problem can hide behind homesickness. Telling them apart helps you act on the right one.
Yes. We practise turning criticism into clear requests, the kind your partner can actually respond to.
Yes. Friends, work, a language, a routine of your own: these make the relationship lighter to carry. We plan small, realistic steps.
I help you think clearly about what you want, without pushing you towards staying or leaving.
Very often. When you respond differently, your partner has to respond differently too. We plan small changes and look at what happens.

A few days of focus, with breaks built in.
Back-to-back couples therapy alone abroad begins with a quick call about your focus, the hours you need and the days you can guard. I then fit the sessions to your local time.
One hour in the morning, one in the afternoon, and a long pause in the middle.
An hour a day over three or four days gives you each evening to reflect.
Every other day across a week, so work and family still fit.
A Saturday or Sunday is occasionally possible. Just ask.
From Hong Kong to Houston, we choose hours that suit your daylight, not mine alone.
We plan follow-up that fits your life abroad, such as a monthly check-in or regular couples therapy alone for people living abroad.

I want therapy to help you understand your experience and make choices you can use in everyday life. We pay attention to feelings, needs and the responses that happen before you have time to think.
Our online room should offer enough trust and honesty to explore what is difficult. I bring attention and professional judgement. You bring your experience, questions and the right to say when something does not fit.
