In this short video, I explain how a fly-in block works, from the first call to the day you fly home.

Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

At a glance

Fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen means several in-person sessions at my practice in the city centre, timed around your visit. It is for couples abroad who travel for experienced help, couples split between two countries, and Danes coming home. Every session runs for two hours, in English.

It is part of couples therapy for couples living abroad. If you only have a Saturday and Sunday, weekend couples therapy in Copenhagen may be enough. Follow-up afterwards can continue online, wherever you live.

You can ask for a free 30-minute call, read my client policy or write to me with the dates you are considering.

Is this the right page for you?

This is for you if…

Fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen is for couples who make the journey to the city for a block of sessions designed around their stay. You both take part, in person.

  • You live abroad, and the right couples therapist is not available where you are.
  • Nobody nearby works in English and knows what international lives are like.
  • Your local expat circle is small, and you want a therapist who is outside it.
  • You are based in two countries, and Copenhagen is somewhere you can both get to.
  • You are Danes living abroad, with a trip home coming up.
  • Time away from jobs and children would help you slow down and talk properly.
  • This year you have just one free stretch, and you want it to count.
  • You want to leave with a plan that keeps the changes alive after you get home.

This is probably not for you if…

This page is for couples who travel to Copenhagen together and stay for several days. If something else describes you better, use its link.

What clients say

These reviews describe clients’ experiences of working with me. They come from my wider practice and do not all relate to online sessions. Each person’s experience is their own, and a review does not promise a particular outcome.

Mark’s view

“Since my first client in 2004, I have noticed that the couples who travel to see me arrive unusually ready. Booking a flight for your relationship is a statement in itself: this matters enough to clear the diary for. That intent changes the work. Without school runs and inboxes pulling at you, a hard conversation can be opened in the morning, rested on in the afternoon and finished the next day. Couples often tell me that the days in Copenhagen did more than months of trying at home.”

Supervision supports the quality of my work

Therapy needs reflection and accountability

I meet regularly with experienced psychotherapists to reflect on my work, question my understanding and develop my skills. Supervision is part of the professional care I bring to individual and couples work, including online sessions.

My focus is thoughtful practice, integrity and responsibility.

Let’s discuss online therapy

You are welcome to ask about the kind of support you need.

Tell me where you are based and your time zone. We can then consider whether online sessions together are suitable.

A typical situation

Aisha works in Nairobi and Ben in London. They have been together for six years, married for two, and see each other one week in four. Every reunion starts warmly and ends in a row about whose career will give way. They could not find a therapist who would work with both of them across two countries.

They plan four days in Copenhagen with two sessions a day. We map the reunion argument and what each of them fears losing. They fly home with an agreement about how to talk about the future, and continue online from their two cities.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

When fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen is worth the journey

A journey made for your relationship deserves a calm room, a clear plan and time to rest.

Some couples cannot find suitable help where they live. Others want to leave ordinary life behind for a few days while they do this work.

Fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen packs several sessions into your stay, with long pauses to rest, walk and reflect.

Is the right therapist simply not where you live?

In many cities, an English-speaking couples therapist with experience of international lives is hard to come by.

A short trip with a clear purpose can be easier than a long search at home.

Is your expat circle too small for privacy?

Where the foreign community is small, the local therapist may well know your boss, your neighbours or your children’s school.

Travelling to Copenhagen keeps your private life private.

Are you based in two different countries?

Some partners are based in two countries and see each other between flights. Copenhagen can be your meeting point, with time set aside for the relationship.

I shape the timetable around both journeys.

Is there only one free stretch in your year?

Perhaps only one week this year is genuinely free, or a handful of days between assignments.

We design the block so none of that time is wasted.

Would leaving routine behind help you talk?

Without the commute, the laundry and the bedtime routine, conversations often slow down by themselves.

I use that calm with care and keep the pace manageable.

Are you Danes abroad with a trip home coming up?

Danes living abroad often have a trip home planned already. Adding a few days of sessions can turn a family visit into a turning point for the relationship.

I fit the block around your plans.

What fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen helps you do

A single theme, generous pauses and a plan to carry home.

During fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen we look at the loop that runs between you, what living apart or abroad adds to it, and the talk you have both been postponing.

How do we use the first sessions?

The opening sessions are for sketching the loop. Over the following days you start to notice it in the moment and, with my help, choose a different move.

Can we open the subject we keep avoiding?

Yes. Because the sessions sit close together, a painful theme can be raised on Tuesday, left overnight and picked up again on Wednesday.

Can we look at what flights and long distances have changed?

Yes. We explore how relocations, long-distance stretches and frequent flights have changed the closeness between you, and what is missing now.

Will we fly home with something concrete?

Yes. On the last day we settle on a few habits to try and a short weekly check-in you can keep up from home.

What happens once we are back home?

We choose a follow-up that suits your life. For many couples that means online sessions from home, a return visit later in the year, or a mix.

What do couples usually take with them?

Most couples leave Copenhagen seeing the same pattern and holding a plan both of them trust.

How a fly-in block with me is planned

No fixed agenda is needed. We pick the theme together ahead of your trip.

Ahead of booking any flights, we speak online to choose the theme, the dates and a sensible number of sessions. If this format does not suit you, I will be straight with you.

What does a block look like?

That depends on the trip. One couple might meet me twice a day for three days, another might prefer four sessions spaced through a week. Pauses are part of every plan.

What do we do between sessions?

Sleep, walk, eat and see something of the city. At most I will give you one small observation task.

How many days should we plan?

Most couples choose between two and five days. We decide that together, according to what you need and what feels manageable.

Do couples come back for a second block?

Normally one visit first, with the follow-up decided on the final day.

Is a bundle sensible for a fly-in block?

A block means several sessions back to back, which is where a bundle pays off by lowering the price per session. Compare the bundle cards further down.

How will we know it worked?

Both of you can describe the pattern, you share a couple of firm agreements, and those changes are still in place weeks after the flight home.

How it works with me

  1. Start with a free 30-minute call, or message me with possible dates, before you buy tickets.
  2. A short online call settles the theme, how many sessions you need and when.
  3. In Copenhagen we meet in person for a block of 2-hour sessions, with pauses to rest between them.
  4. At the end we agree what comes next: online sessions from home, a second block or a pause.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen?

Fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen is a block of couples sessions arranged around a trip. Each session lasts two hours, in English, in person at my practice in the city centre.

Can we have two sessions in one day?

Yes, if that suits you. On days with two sessions, there is a long pause in the middle.

Can the sessions be spread over a week?

Yes. Spacing the sessions out over a week leaves room to recover and to try things between them.

Do you help with travel or accommodation?

Travel and hotels are yours to arrange. I am glad to suggest which areas are handy for reaching the practice.

We live in two different countries. Can this work?

Yes, many couples I see do. We choose dates when both of you can get to Copenhagen, and afterwards we can continue online from your two countries.

We are Danes living abroad. Can we combine it with a visit home?

Yes. You can plan fly-in couples therapy in Copenhagen around a visit home. We work in English.

What if it becomes too much?

Then we ease off, take a longer pause or rework the timetable. The block serves you; it is not something to endure.

What happens after the block?

We settle on a follow-up together: online sessions from home, another visit to Copenhagen, or a break.

What does a block cost?

Every session is a 2-hour couples session, so the total depends on the number you plan. Current fees, in US dollars, are on my prices page, and a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent.

How do we plan our trip?

How I approach our work

What matters to me

I want therapy to help you understand your experience and make choices you can use in everyday life. We pay attention to feelings, needs and the responses that happen before you have time to think.

The space we create

Our online room should offer enough trust and honesty to explore what is difficult. I bring attention and professional judgement. You bring your experience, questions and the right to say when something does not fit.
